Terms of use

Version 1.0 In force from 31 August 2026

Terms of use

These terms are in force, as are the other four policy documents. They were reviewed and lifted out of draft together, on one review rather than one at a time, so that the five read as a single set rather than as five documents of different vintages.

What these terms are

These are the terms of using the site at all. They bind anyone with an account, whether or not they ever upload a photograph: how old you have to be, what the catalog does and does not promise, whose law applies, how these terms change, and who to write to.

Accepting them is what registration asks for. If you go on to contribute photographs, the contribution terms ask something further and more specific — what permission you are granting over a particular photograph — and they are affirmed each time you contribute rather than once when you join.

The other documents

Three further documents describe how the site is run. They are listed here so you can find them, not folded into what you are accepting: they are not terms you agree to.

  • The content rules are the standards the site enforces about what may be posted. They apply because the site enforces them, not because you agreed.
  • The privacy notice tells you what happens to information about you. It is a statement of what we do, not a bargain.
  • Copyright and takedown is the procedure for reporting a photograph you hold rights in.

Each of those documents carries its own version and changes on its own schedule. A change to one of them does not change these terms and does not ask you to accept anything again.

Age

You must be at least 13, or older if the country you are in sets a higher age for digital consent. We do not collect birth dates.

Registration asks you to accept these terms, of which this age rule is one clause. It does not ask for a date of birth, and it names the rule rather than a number, because the age that applies depends on where you are and we do not ask where that is. If you already had an account before we started asking, you are asked to accept the first time you contribute.

The digital-consent age we know of, last checked on 30 August 2026, is 13 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Portugal, Belgium, Czechia, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; 14 in Austria, Italy and Spain; 15 in France and Slovenia; and 16 in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Malta, Cyprus and Romania. This list is a courtesy and not a ruling: the rule that binds you is the one in your own jurisdiction, and a country missing or out of date here does not mean we have told you that you are allowed.

We do not knowingly accept accounts below that age, and we do not accept photographs depicting identifiable minors.

No warranty

The catalog is maintained by volunteers and offered as-is. Fabric specifications are contributed and curated in good faith and may still be wrong. Check anything that matters — a measurement here is evidence, not a guarantee, and it is not a substitute for a sample in your hand.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the applicable federal law of the United States. Disputes belong to the state and federal courts sitting in Virginia.

Changes

Every policy document carries a version written as major.minor. While a document is still a draft its version starts with 0; the first version that is actually in force is 1.0.

The two halves mean different things, and the difference decides what we ask of you:

  • A major change means what you are agreeing to has materially changed. You are asked to accept the new version the next time you contribute, with a summary of what changed rather than a diff to hunt through. You are not stopped from reading the catalog, and being asked is not a penalty.
  • A minor change means the same obligations have been reworded, corrected, or clarified. We tell you it happened and we do not ask you to accept anything again.

The version you accepted is recorded against your account, so what you agreed to can always be recovered — not merely the fact that you agreed.
